The Cost of Not Being Involved is Too High

Today we are fighting a war that many have said we will not win.  Some feel as though there is no hope.  This war is costing us the lives of our loved ones.  This war is a multi-million dollar tax burden.  It seems as if the more we spend and the more lives it costs — the more it escalates and spirals out of control.  It is causing grandparents to become parents again in retirement years as their children are lost to the war.  We have yet to see the total cost and devastation.  How many men and women of ALL ages will have to lose their very lives before we rise up in unity and say, "No more!"?  Abraham Lincoln once said, "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves, and, under a just God, cannot long retain it."

We are blessed by God to live in freedom today — a gift from Him that was not without cost.  Freedom is always costly.  To Him His Son — to us, self-sacrificing love for others.  John F. Kennedy said, "The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it."  Throughout our history as a nation, brave Americans have sacrificed for the freedom of others.  Today is no different.  We will fight for the freedom of our loved ones.

No community is exempt.  With the emergence of the manufacturing of methamphetamines (crystal meth or ice) in makeshift labs all across Northwest Georgia, this dangerous drug has become readily available in almost every community and neighborhood.  This drug causes immediate damage with one use to the neurotransmitter receptors in the brain and continued use produces numerous other health hazards as well as dental damage.  Depression, paranoia, hallucinations, and violent behavior will soon torment the user.  Continued use destroys families, puts children at risk and destroys healthy lifestyles, including productivity in the employment sector and home.  Many die each year throughout the United States with heart problems, brain hemorrhages, overdoses and many other issues related to this drug problem.

Lives of young preschool age children are being irreversibly wrecked.  Parents are spending many restless nights and losing hope for their children.  It is said that methamphetamines can "hook" someone with just one use.  Children and teenagers are becoming addicted to this deadly drug at 10 years old and even younger.

Incarceration is not the answer.  We cannot build enough prisons fast enough.  Neither is time in prison "fixing" the problem or treating the addicted.  It is time for drastic measures to save the lives of our loved ones, our families and our communities — no one will go untouched.  Counseling and treatment are critical ingredients needed in the mix required to eliminate this enemy attacking us in our own land today.

The people of Northwest Georgia are rising up in unity to fight this war being waged in our own neighborhoods.
