5 Signs Your Marriage Needs More Than a Date Night

By Tony Gore, LCSW, Owner/Director · July 18, 2026 · Couples & Marriage Counseling

Marriage advice loves to reach for the easy fix: schedule a date night, say "I love you" more, do a gratitude jar. Those things help. But sometimes a marriage is asking for something a standing Friday reservation can't give it.

The pattern usually looks like this

Couples often tell us the same story in different words: we still love each other, we just don't feel close anymore. Conversations stay on the surface — logistics, kids, the calendar — because anything deeper risks a fight neither of you wants to have again.

Five signs it's more than a busy season

These signs point to something deeper than a busy season: the two of you have been trying to solve a relational problem in your marriage with a logistical solution, and it hasn't worked because it was never really about the calendar.

Marriage counseling gives you a structured, supported space to say the harder things out loud, with someone trained to help you hear each other instead of just taking turns talking. That's usually the missing piece: a different way of talking to each other.

If any of this sounds familiar, take it as a sign you're closer to a breakthrough than it feels like right now.
