Can You Trust God and Still Be in Therapy?

By Rhonda Gore, MFT, Life Coach · May 10, 2026 · Christian / Faith-Based Counseling

For some Christians, the hardest part of starting counseling is getting past the quiet worry that needing one says something about their faith. If I really trusted God, shouldn't prayer be enough?

That worry is understandable, and it's also based on a misunderstanding of what faith and counseling are each for.

Two different kinds of help

God gave us prayer, Scripture, and community. He also gave us doctors, medicine, and yes, counselors. Nobody questions a Christian's faith for going to a physician when they break a bone. A mind and heart carrying anxiety, grief, or trauma are no different: legitimate, physical, and worth just as much care.

Counseling works alongside faith rather than replacing it. For many clients, it's where faith and daily life finally meet — a space to explore honest questions about God, suffering, and identity that don't always fit neatly into a Sunday morning conversation.

What this looks like in practice

Faith-integrated counseling means prayer, Scripture, and spiritual reflection are welcome and woven in where they're wanted — never forced, and never treated as a shortcut past the clinical work itself. You don't have to choose between good theology and good therapy. The goal is both, held together.

If you've been carrying something heavy while also carrying doubt about whether it's okay to get help, that doubt is worth setting down first. Needing support is often exactly where your faith and your healing start working together.
