DBT-informed therapy in Louisville for when emotions feel too big

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills help you ride out intense emotions, handle distress, and keep relationships steady. We teach them in individual counseling.

You might be here because

  • Your emotions go from zero to a hundred, fast.
  • You react in ways you regret, then feel ashamed.
  • Small things feel unbearable in the moment.
  • Relationships feel intense, or keep falling apart.
  • You've heard DBT skills can help, and you want to learn them.
  • You want practical tools you can use the same day.

Skills for big emotions

DBT was developed to help people who feel emotions intensely. It teaches four sets of skills: mindfulness (staying present), distress tolerance (getting through a crisis without making it worse), emotion regulation (understanding and calming strong feelings), and interpersonal effectiveness (asking for what you need while keeping relationships intact).

DBT-informed counseling, not a full DBT program

Our counselors are DBT-informed: they teach and practice DBT skills within individual counseling, alongside other approaches. Freedom doesn't offer comprehensive DBT, which includes a weekly skills group, phone coaching between sessions, and a DBT consultation team, and neither counselor is DBT-certified.

DBT-informed counseling can be a good fit if you want skills for handling emotions and relationships.

Faith at the center, never forced

If you want faith to be part of your counseling, your counselor will bring it in. If not, you'll get the same clinical care. You lead.

When you need more than we offer

If you're dealing with frequent self-harm, repeated suicidal crises, or your provider has recommended comprehensive DBT, a full program is the better fit. Call us anyway, and we'll help you find one.

Your first session

Your first session is about understanding what's been happening and what you'd like to handle differently. If you're in crisis or need a higher level of care, your counselor will help you find it. Sessions are in our Middletown office or online.

What it costs

$100 to $115

per 50-minute session

We don't bill insurance, but we'll give you a superbill to submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
